Expert Urges Hard-line Approach on NK

An expert on Northeast Asian affairs says South Korea and the U.S. should employ measures that are drastically different from the ones they currently employ in order to persuade North Korea to behave in a sensible way.

Lawyer and author Gordon Chang said in a contribution to Forbes that South Korea and the U.S. incorrectly think that the use of force is inconceivable.

He said that the U.S. must do as North Korea has done and announce the abrogation of the 1953 Korean War Armistice, which the North has violated on various occasions.

He said that by not imposing any consequences on the North for its belligerent behavior, including the sinking of the “Cheonan” in March and the shelling of Yeonpyeong last week, Seoul has encouraged Kim Jong-il to continue to kill South Koreans.

Chang also said that South Korea should order its companies in the Gaeseong Industrial Complex to close their facilities there, adding that “it is shameful for South Korean leaders to talk of North Korea’s ‘unpardonable’ acts while funding them at the same time.”

He claimed that it is necessary to change the way North Korea views the world in order to ease tension in Northeast Asia.
