US Delegation Discusses Korean Affairs in China

High-ranking U.S. delegates visiting China say they have discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula and regional affairs with Chinese officials.

In a written statement released Friday, the delegation headed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said the two sides discussed bilateral and regional concerns including the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea's artillery attack on a South Korea island last month is believed to have been the main topic of discussion.

The statement also said the U.S. held useful talks with China regarding follow-up measures to the implementation of the 2005 six-party agreement on North Korea's denuclearization. This suggests the two sides also may have discussed the North's uranium enrichment.

Steinberg said Washington-Beijing relations and Chinese President Hu Jintao's scheduled visit to the U.S. next month were also discussed.
