Search for Missing Crew of Sunken Ship Ends

The search for 17 missing crew members of a South Korean fishing vessel that sank near Antarctica on Monday has ended five days after the boat sank.

Families of the missing South Korean members of the crew on Friday notified Insung Corporation, which owns the sunken vessel, that it may suspend the search, citing no progress after five days.

The families plan to meet with the corporation on Monday to discuss funeral arrangements and compensation.

A ship carrying 20 of the fishermen who were rescued after the No. 1 In Sung went down and the remains of five who died will likely return to Korea early next month.

The 614-ton fishing vessel was carrying 42 crew members when it went down around 4:30 a.m. Korean time in waters some 25-hundred kilometers off New Zealand. Five crew members died and 17 are missing with the other 22 crew members rescued.
