The U.N. Security Council failed to agree Sunday during an eight-hour emergency meeting proposed by Russia to adopt a statement on escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
China is reportedly the only member state that is refusing to adopt a statement denouncing the North for its attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island last month and the March sinking of the South’s “Cheonan” naval vessel. The 14 other participating nations, including Russia, have agreed on the statement.
Initially, Russia was aligned with China in terms of denouncing North Korea but later changed its stance.
Following the meeting, Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Vitaly Churkin said UNSC members might hold another meeting Monday to further discuss the situation.
Meanwhile, the UNSC was briefed by South and North Korean representatives on their respective positions in regards to the security situation.
South Korea defended its shooting drills in waters near Yeonpyeong as an act of self-defense.
North Korea said it will respond militarily if South Korea provokes the North through the drills.
