South Korea’s ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire says the embassy has devised an evacuation plan for South Koreans residing in the West African nation amid growing political unrest.
Ambassador Park Yoon-joon told Korean media over the phone Monday that the embassy has also secured enough food supplies to feed 100 South Koreans for a week.
Park said political tensions in the African nation grew due to a standoff over results of a presidential election that was held last month. Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and former Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara both claimed to have won the November 28th presidential contest.
Park said protests over the results have subsided and some 30 people have returned to South Korea. He said that the South Koreans who remain in Côte d'Ivoire have been asked to refrain from engaging in outdoor activities and to exercise extra caution in terms of safety.
