The Chinese government is reportedly planning an overhaul of its transportation network linking it with North Korea.

China said Tuesday that it is planning a Changchun-Jilin-Tumen Pilot Zone to be built in the Tumen river delta between the two nations.

Also in the works is an economic belt encompassing both North Korean and Chinese territory that will link China with North Korea’s Rajin and Chongjin ports. China intends to overhaul the roads and railways that link the two regions.

After Chinese authorities approved the plans to build the pilot zone in November, it came up with detailed plans on the building of a new transportation network. They included a network of roads and train tracks that link Chinese territory with North Korea's Rajin, Chongjin, and Musan regions.

China aims to first secure rights to use the port, thereby increasing access to Rajin. It will also build by 2015 a highway linking Hunchun with Rajin.
