'Obama to Face FTA Challenge Next Year'

A U.S. trade magazine says that ratifying the free trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea is one of the top challenges President Barack Obama will face next year.

The Internet edition of Inside U.S. Trade says Obama will likely face five major trade challenges in the coming year amid the new political landscape with a Republican House and a stronger Republican presence in the Senate.

It said the first challenge is how Obama will deal with the Republican call that the FTA with South Korea be ratified together with the FTAs with Columbia and Panama.

The magazine says this Republican strategy of linking the trade deals may lead the Korea FTA to fail.

If the Republicans maintain their stance, the article says Obama will face a tough political decision, as he has voiced opposition to the trade pact with Columbia.
