US Wants to See Tensions on Korean Peninsula Ease

The United States has stressed that it wants to see tensions on the Korean Peninsula ease.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters Monday that the U.S. has taken notice of public statements about the potential for improved dialogue between the two Koreas, referring to a New Year’s pledge made by Pyongyang to seek inter-Korean talks.

Crowley said that dialogue between South and North Korea is obviously important and is an essential element of easing tensions.

He added, however, that words have to be followed by actions. He said Washington will be looking to see what North Korea actually does, not just what it says.

He urged Pyongyang to take steps to ease tensions with the South, cease provocative actions, and show a seriousness of purpose by following through with its commitments.
