Japan to Seek Direct Dialogue with NK

Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara says Japan will work to create an environment in which direct bilateral dialogue with North Korea is possible.

Maehara said Tuesday in his first news conference of the year that direct dialogue between Tokyo and Pyongyang is necessary, as the North Korean issue should not be handled only on multilateral occasions or during six-party talks, which depend on the participation of other countries.

He said it is important to create an environment that will allow Tokyo to hold firm and direct talks with Pyongyang on North Korean abductions of Japanese nationals and issues related to missiles and nuclear weapons.
