Japan’s Diet Ratifies Agreement to Return Ancient Korean Texts

The upper house in the Japanese Diet has ratified an agreement on the return of historic Korean texts to South Korea following its passage in the lower house.

The upper house passed the measure on Friday to return the 1,205 volumes of ancient Korean texts. 145 members voted in favor of the agreement and 86 voted against it in the plenary session.

The agreement will likely take effect during a cabinet meeting in Japan, which is expected to be next Tuesday.

The Japanese government will then make preparations to return them within six months, as set forth in the agreement.
