A U.S. expert on defoliants says he is convinced that U.S. and South Korean inspectors will not find drums containing Agent Orange at U.S. Army base Camp Carroll.
Alvin Young said that he had gone through all related records he could find and concluded that that there was no Agent Orange buried at Camp Carroll in North Gyeongsang Province. In 2006, Young wrote a report for the U.S. Defense Department on the use of Agents Orange and Blue adjacent to the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in 1968.
He said the records showed that all the toxic materials brought from Vietnam were used in the DMZ and "there were none" taken back to the U.S. base in South Korea.
However, Young was quick to add that he is not aware if there are any additional toxic materials buried in the U.S. base.
Young's remarks run counter to claims made by some retired American soldiers who said they had helped dump large amounts of Agent Orange at Camp Carroll in the late 1970s.
