Korean Victims of Radiation Exposure Sue Japan for Medical Fees

Survivors of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and the bereaved families of other victims who suffered from exposure to radiation filed a lawsuit in Japan on Wednesday.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer said this is the first time victims of radiation exposure in Hiroshima who live in countries other than Japan have sued the Japanese government demanding compensation for medical expenses.

The Japanese government has paid for only part of the medical treatment fees, as health subsidies, to victims residing outside Japan.

The Koreans are demanding payment from the Osaka prefecture government as it issued them with identification acknowledging that they are victims of radiation exposure who live outside Japan.
