Prosecution, Pirates All Appeal

The five Somali pirates convicted for hijacking the Korean freighter Samho Jewelry and other charges have appealed against the court’s initial decision.

The lawyers for the five pirates said they are pleading innocent to some of the charges, which includes the attempted murder charge against Mahomed Arai. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for having shot the Samho Jewelry’s captain Seok Hae-kyun multiple times. The other four pirates received prison sentences ranging from 13 to 15 years.

The prosecution has also appealed, saying the pirates’ sentences are too lenient, as it had sought a death penalty for Arai. The trials will now proceed as an appeals case with no jury, which will be ruled on by the Busan High Court.
