UN Chief Declares Bid for 2nd Term

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that he will seek to serve a second five-year term as chief of the world organization.

In a news conference at the U.N. headquarters in New York on Monday, Ban said if supported by U.N.’s member states, he would “be deeply honored to serve once more.”

The U.N. Security Council will convene a closed-door meeting sometime this week and discuss whether to recommend Ban for the top post for a second time. The entire U.N. General Assembly is expected to decide whether to reelect Ban at the end of this month.

Ban is highly likely to be reelected as he has apparently secured the support of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council that hold the right to recommend or reject candidates to sit as U.N. chief.

Several of the Security Council members made statements in support of Ban on Monday. U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner told reporters that the U.N. faces an array of daunting challenges and the U.S. has worked constructively with Ban on many of them.

China’s U.N. Ambassador Li Baodong said the U.N.’s Asian Group will endorse Ban's candidacy, adding he hopes Ban will win wide support for his reelection.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in a statement that Ban has shown courage and determination during a time of crisis, adding that France has no doubt that he will show those same qualities during a second term at the head of the U.N.

In order to be reelected, Ban must win the approval of the U.N. Security Council’s five permanent member states and the approval of at least four non-permanent members of the council. Then an entire U.N. General Assembly will decide on his reelection.

If reelected, Ban, who served as South Korea’s foreign minister, will serve as U.N. Secretary General through the end of 2016. His current term ends on December 31st.
