US Remains Concerned Food Aid to NK Could be Diverted

The United States says it’s still concerned that if it provides food aid to North Korea, the aid may end up in the wrong hands.

State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner told reporters on Tuesday that one of the U.S.’s concerns regarding food assistance to Pyongyang is that somehow the aid could be diverted or used for other means.

He made the comment after being asked whether there was a possibility that the food aid could end up going to the North’s military.

Toner said in terms of deciding whether to provide food assistance, assessment is one side of it and the other side is having monitoring in place to make sure that the food reaches the people it needs to reach.

Toner said an assessment team that evaluated the food shortage situation in the North has returned to the U.S., adding that Washington doesn’t have any decision yet regarding food aid to the North.
