US State Dept Opposes Bill to Ban Food Aid to N.Korea

Radio Free Asia (RFA) says the U.S. State Department has called on the U.S. Senate to help prevent an amendment of a law that would ban food aid to North Korea.

RFA reported that the State Department told the Senate Committees on Appropriations and on Foreign Relations that the Agriculture Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2012 excessively restricts the executive branch of the U.S. government. The report also stated that the State Department requested the removal of the bill during discussions with the House.

The State Department’s move is an indication that the U.S. could provide food aid to North Korea.

The bill up for revision, which prohibits funding for food assistance to North Korea, passed in the House on June 15th.
