Japanese media have been actively covering the news of Pyeongchang’s successful bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
The island nation’s press covered in detail the competition that took place between Pyeongchang, Germany’s Munich and France’s Annecy in seeking to host the winter event. Kyodo News said the Gangwon Province county had shown sincerity during its final presentation before the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday.
Japanese media also analyzed what effects Pyeongchang’s hosting of the event will have on Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
The Sankei Shimbun expressed concerns over Pyeongchang’s selection and Tokyo’s bid, citing that there has been no successive hosts of the Winter and Summer Olympics on one continent since Norway’s Lillehammer held the 1994 Winter Games.
The Asahi Shimbun also said Japan has mixed feelings about South Korea's hosting of the Olympic Games.
