Kyodo News: 2 US Legislators Say US Should Not Provide Food Aid to NK

Japan’s Kyodo News says two U.S. lawmakers expressed opposition to the United States providing food aid to North Korea.

The report said Thursday that Jim Webb, chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chairwoman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, stressed that the U.S. should not make any food aid provisions to the North.

It also stated that the two lawmakers made the comment when they met with a delegation of Japanese Diet members in Washington.

Kyodo reported that when the Japanese delegation met with U.S. government officials and legislators, it requested that the U.S. not offer food aid to Pyongyang.

The Japanese delegation underlined that the food aid will not go to the people that need it the most even if monitoring is boosted during the food aid distribution process.
