S.Korea Seeking Countermeasures Against Japan’s Ban

The South Korean government is mulling a wide variety of response measures to Japan’s planned ban, which prohibits Japanese diplomats from taking Korean Air flights for one month from July 18.

A South Korean government official said that for now, South Korea has demanded Japan to withdraw the measure and is now waiting to see Japan’s response. The official said that South Korea will review a wide variety of countermeasures if Japan does not lift the ban.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan is reportedly planning to express strong regret to his Japanese counterpart at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting set for next week in Indonesia. Sources say that that the South Korean government is considering opening to the public the construction sites of facilities on the Dokdo islets to display the nation’s effective control over the territory.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry's ban is in protest over the airline's test flight last month above the Dokdo islets. It also reportedly issued instructions to its officials not to invite Korean Air officials to events hosted by the Japanese ministry for one month.
