UN to Evaluate S.Korean CEDAW after 4 Yrs

The nation's gender equality policies will undergo review on its implementation of the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This review will be Korea's fifth evaluation for CEDAW in four years.

The Gender Equality and Family Ministry said that a government delegation comprising of 14 members, including Minister Paik Hee-young, will be reviewed on its compliance with CEDAW next Tuesday before the 49th Session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

CEDAW requires each of the 186 member nations to submit a regular report, which will then be evaluated on the country’s implementation of its policies. The convention is one of the seven UN-related human rights treaty bodies.

South Korea ratified CEDAW in 1984 and has since submitted its national reports seven times.
