S.Korea, China Oppose Any Action Threatening Peace

Defense ministers of South Korea and China say they are opposed to any actons that threaten peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin and Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie issued a four-point joint statement after holding the eighth defense ministerial talks in Beijing on Friday.

The two nations agreed to establish national defense strategy dialogue between delegations headed by the South Korean deputy defense minister and the deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. The first of the meetings will be held late in July in Seoul.

In addition, the two nations have decided to resume bilateral military education exchanges that have been suspended since 2005.

The two nations also signed an agreement to provide mutual aid for international disasters and agreed to step up collaboration in United Nations peacekeeping operations, disaster relief and efforts to combat piracy.

However, the defense ministers’ joint statement did not address North Korean attacks on South Korea's Cheonan naval vessel and on Yeonpyeong Island, which limits open pressure on the North.
