UN Chief Says Sustainable Development to be Top Priority

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he will make sustainable development his top priority during his second five-year term.

Ban unveiled his plan during the Third Global Review of Aid for Trade that was organized by the World Trade Organization in Geneva on Tuesday.

The Secretary-General said "the United Nations' top priority for this year and many years beyond will have to be sustainable development," which will focus on reducing poverty and improving people’s quality of life while also seeking to minimize harm to the environment for future generations.

Ban added that sustainable development is a theme that would draw together many goals of the U.N., including addressing climate change, global health, women's issues and food, water and energy shortages. He said all of these aims are closely connected.

The U.N. chief's second term begins on January first next year.
