A senior South Korean United Nation's official says he is not optimistic about the possibility of North Korea engaging in future dialogue despite recent meetings held with South Korea and the U.S.
During a meeting with South Korean correspondents in New York Monday, the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, cautioned against being "too optimistic or too pessimistic" at any given state of Korean Peninsula affairs.
He said that in the long term perspective there have been many occasions with North Korea that were hard to attach a special meaning to, and that the international community has been "disappointed and frustrated too often” with the North’s actions. The UN official warned against relapsing to such a pattern.
The U.N. official said the North's intent behind its recent meetings was to "induce comments that recognize the regime as a nuclear state, win recognition from many countries for a power secession and draw investment or assistance amid economic difficulties."
