Obama Urges Congress for Swift Ratification of FTAs

U.S. President Barack Obama has urged the U.S. Congress to swiftly ratify pending free trade agreements with South Korea, Panama and Colombia.

Obama made the call on Tuesday after the U.S. Senate passed a bill to raise the U.S. debt limit and avert financial default. The president urged Congress to pass the pending trade deals so he can sign them into law as soon as it gets back from recess.

The president said after Congress reconvenes he will call on it to immediately take “bipartisan, common-sense steps” that will create an environment where businesses can hire, people have more money in their pockets to spend and those who are out of work can find jobs.

Congress will go into recess next Monday through Labor Day on September fifth.
