China and Russia Agree to Resolve Syrian Situation Politically

China’s state-owned Xinhua News Agency reports that foreign ministers of China and Russia have pledged to work together to resolve the situation in Syria through political solutions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Thursday in Beijing where the two nations reiterated their support for the six-point peace plan for Syria proposed by the UN-Arab League envoy for Syria, Kofi Annan.

The 14-month long period of turbulence in Syria is said to have killed around 12-thousand people, to which the UN-Arab League has suggested a plan for peace by deploying a UN surveillance team.

Minister Yang reportedly stressed that “all sides concerned should respect Syria's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," adding that the future of Syria should be decided by the Syrian people on their own.
