'Democratic Party Platform Likely to Back Gay Marriage'

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says it is likely the Democratic Party platform will adopt support for the legalization of gay marriage now that President Obama has formally endorsed the marriage of same-sex couples.

Reid said Thursday that since Obama supports gay marriage, he's sure it will become part of the party platform. Delegates to the Democratic National Convention in September will vote on the platform.

Democratic Congresswoman and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi advocated the President’s support for gay marriage, saying it is historically meaningful despite troubles it could create for the party.

Pelosi stressed that Obama’s position will enhance the human rights of Americans, which is more important than any political consequence.
