French Prime Minister Francois Fillon resigned on Friday as newly elected president Francois Hollande's administration is set to take over.

The Elysee Palace said Prime Minister Fillon delivered a letter of resignation that was accepted by incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The resignation of the Fillon follows Sarkozy's defeat in a run-off presidential election on Sunday.

The French constitutional council said that Socialist Francois Hollande won 51-point-six percent of the votes, while Sarkozy won just 48-point-4 percent, becoming the president-elect of the European nation.
