Companies from South Korea and China will take part in developing the Kuril Islands, according to Japan’s Kyoto News Agency who cited Russian media.

The islands are part of a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan.

Sakhalin Governor Alexander Horoshavin said the companies will take part in developing infrastructure and agriculture projects on the islands of Iturup and Kunashir, according to Kyodo.

Companies from South Korea will participate in building a coastal wall on Iturup, a project worth roughly 53 billion won.

The Japanese government has continuously stated that it cannot accept Russia’s project to develop the islands.
