Blind Chinese Activist Almost Prepared to Leave China

Hong Kong media report that Blind Chinese human rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng and his family have completed procedures to leave China.

Chen said in a phone interview with Hong Kong media that he filled out a passport application Wednesday at a hospital where he is staying with an immigration official from his hometown of Shandong Province.

A Hong Kong newspaper projected that Chen’s passport will be issued on June sixth.

Chen, a well-known Chinese human rights activist, made a dramatic escape from house arrest into the protection of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late April. He has expressed his wish to go to the U.S.
