Gov't Urged to Work for Release of 4 Activists Detained in China

Supporters for the release of activist Kim Young-hwan have called on South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan to ensure the safety of four activists who are currently being detained in China. They asked the government to accelerate efforts so that the four detainees can contact attorneys, consuls and their family members as soon as possible.

The four activists were arrested by the Chinese police on March 29 on charges of endangering China’s national security when they demanded Beijing to free North Korean detainees.

Kim Young-hwan’s family expressed their worries over Kim’s health, saying that he had suffered from stomach cancer in the past. They also asked to find out the truth whether the four activists refused to meet with consuls.

The South Korean Foreign Minister said he will do his best for a swift release of the four activists through diplomatic negotiations with China.
