Spanish People Protest against Education Budget Cut

Spanish teachers, students and parents have staged massive rallies and strikes against a cut in the education budget and tuition hikes.

The protesters called on the Spanish government Tuesday to withdraw its budget cut at the rallies in Madrid, Barcelona and other parts of the nation.

Organizers said 100-thousand people rallied in Madrid, and police estimated 25-thousand took to the streets in Barcelona.

The Spanish government slashed its budget for education as part of efforts to overcome the current fiscal crisis and reduce a fiscal deficit of eight-point-nine percent last year to five-point-three percent this year.
