Britain Seeks Diplomatic Solutions to WikiLeaks Founder Situation

The British government is seeking diplomatic solutions to the turmoil surrounding WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up in Ecuador's embassy in London since June 19th.

The British Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that Britain will not allow Assange safe passage out of the country. But the office added that Britain will continue to engage in dialogue with the Ecuadorian government and seek diplomatic solutions.

Britain and Ecuador have been at diplomatic odds since Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a letter to the Latin American country that it might not respect the extraterritoriality of the Ecuadorian embassy for the arrest of the WikiLeaks founder. The Ecuadorian government announced last week that it would grant asylum to Assange.
