WMO Stresses Need for Better Drought Policies

The World Meteorological Organization is recommending that countries around the world introduce policies to manage droughts, noting the consequences of severe droughts in the U.S. and Africa.

The organization said the drought in the U.S. and its impact on the international food market underlines the need for countries across the world to devise policies to conserve and save more water.

The meteorological organization explained that integrated, danger-based policies tackling droughts are needed, instead of the current fragmented, crisis-centered ones.

The WMO stated that only Australia has desirable antidrought policies along those lines.

The organization will hold a meeting on drought policies in Geneva, Switzerland next March to be attended by high-ranking officials from countries all over the world.
