UN to Put Arms Trade Treaty to Vote on Tuesday

The UN General Assembly will vote on a draft treaty to regulate the global trade of conventional weapons on Tuesday.

A UN spokesman said the vote will begin shortly after President of the Final United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, Peter Woolcott, delivers a report at the General Assembly, which convenes at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Korean time.

If approved by the General Assembly, the treaty will come into force after 50 member countries ratify it.

The treaty is aimed at regulating the 70 billion U.S. dollars worth of global trade in conventional arms and related parts to prevent genocide and war crimes.

The UN held the conference for ten days with an aim to achieve a unanimous agreement on the treaty by 193 member countries. However, the conference failed to do so because of opposition from countries such as North Korea, Iran and Syria.
