Abe to Visit Russia Late This Month

Russian and Japanese media report that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Russia late this month.

Quoting a diplomatic source, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that the Japanese prime minister is scheduled to visit Russia on April 29th.

Japan’s Kyodo News also said that the two countries are discussing Abe’s visit to Russia, which will likely be on April 29th or the 30th.

If Abe makes the trip, he will become the first Japanese prime minister to visit Russia in ten years. Former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited in January 2003.

Abe is expected to hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his stay. The two leaders are also expected to discuss Russia’s supply of natural gas to Japan and the disputed Kuril Islands.
