CNN reports there is a possibility North Korea may seek to launch a ballistic missile shortly.
CNN quoted a U.S. official Thursday as saying “communication intercepts in recent days also seem to show that Pyongyang might be planning to launch a mobile ballistic missile in the coming days or weeks.”
The official said it is believed a missile launch would be a "test" launch rather than a targeted strike. The official said he believes the missile in question is a Musudan missile, which the North has never tested before.
The Musudan missile, which was unveiled for the first time in 2007 during a military parade in Pyongyang, is believed to be able to reach as far as the U.S. territory of Guam with a range of up to three to four thousand kilometers. About 50 Musudan missiles are believed to be deployed throughout North Korea.
CNN, however, reported the missiles are not at a level where they can pose a threat to the U.S. military base in Guam, although they can target South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia.
