Shanghai Shuts Down Poultry Sellers in Market Amid Bird Flu Scare

Authorities in Shanghai have shut down part of a market that sells poultry after a new strain of bird flu was traced to pigeons at the market.

The Shanghai Agriculture Commission ordered the mass culling of poultry at the market and told quarantine officials to thoroughly process the culled birds, their feces and contaminated foods. The commission also instructed thorough disinfection of people and vehicles that transported poultry into and out of the market.

Poultry-handling zones in two other markets in Minhang district where the H7N9 bird flu virus was also traced were ordered to shut down as well.

A total of five people have died from the virus in China.
