UN Chief Expresses Deep Concerns about Situation on Korean Peninsula

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is deeply concerned by mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Ban said in Madrid on Thursday that he is “concerned that if by any misjudgment, by any miscalculation of the situation, if any unwanted crisis happens on the Korean Peninsula, this will have very serious implications.”

Ban also said that nuclear threat is not a game and the North should fully abide by the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

While in Madrid, Ban attended a high-level UN meeting and urged for active cooperation of UN members to achieve the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Such goals aim to resolve eight issues, including poverty, general equality and illiteracy, by 2015.
