A Chinese state-run newspaper is calling on China to use the issue of Okinawa Island as leverage in dealing with Japan.

The Global Times said in an editorial Thursday that the Chinese civilian sector should actively support a newly launched Okinawan organization seeking the southern island’s independence from Japan.

The editorial said that Okinawa’s independence from Japan is legitimate and China should help Okinawan people in the independence movement within the boundaries of international law.

Two Chinese scholars called for the revisiting of the unsolved historical issue of Okinawa in China’s official People’s Daily on May eighth, provoking strong protest from Japan.
