UN Adopts New Resolution Condemning Syria

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a new resolution condemning Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and his regime and called for rapid progress on a political transition.

Led by Arab countries like Qatar, the resolution passed the UN General Assembly with 107 votes in favor, 12 against and 59 abstentions.

Russia, China, Syria, Iran and North Korea opposed the resolution while Argentina, Brazil, India, and South Africa abstained.

The latest resolution strongly denounced the Syrian government’s increasing use of heavy weapons and widespread violation of human rights. It defined the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces “as the effective representative interlocutor” for a political transition.
