US Keeps N. Korea off State Sponsors of Terrorism List

The United States has kept North Korea off its state sponsors of terrorism list for the fifth year in a row amid the North’s third nuclear test and threats of war.

In its Country Reports on Terrorism 2012 report recently submitted to Congress, the State Department said North Korea is not known to have sponsored any terrorist acts since the bombing of a Korean Air flight in 1987.

The report did say that the United States recertified North Korea as “not cooperating fully” with U.S. counterterrorism efforts under the amended Arms Export and Control Act.

The department also said that the Financial Action Task Force expressed continued concerns about North Korea, explaining it failed to provide a thorough explanation on allegations it engaged in money laundering and terrorist financing.

The previous administration of U.S. President George W. Bush took North Korea off the list of state sponsors of terrorism list in return for its progress declaring the extent of its nuclear activities in October 2008.

The State Department redesignated Iran, Syria, Cuba and Sudan as state sponsors of terrorism.
