The U.S. is known to be seeking to hold a trilateral meeting with South Korea and Japan on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Brunei later this month.
AFP quoted a U.S. government official as saying that the three countries share views on many issues but relations between Seoul and Tokyo have not been good recently. The news agency reported that Washington is promoting a separate meeting among foreign ministers of the three countries during the regional security forum.
AFP added that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will pressure North Korea to make good on its denuclearization promises during the three-day ASEAN Regional Forum, which will open on June 30th.
Japanese daily the Yomiuri Shimbun also reported recently that foreign ministers of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan would meet in Brunei on July second and reaffirm their cooperation in dealing with North Korea’s missile and nuclear issues.
