Korea-Cameroon Joint Project Sees First Rice Harvest

Hankyong National University says it has harvested three tons of rice plants using domestic technology from a half hectare experimental field in Cameroon.

This marks the first harvest using localized rice cultivation technology Korean researchers developed for Africa to help with food shortage concerns.

The South Korean university and the Korea Rural Community Corporation have jointly worked on mechanizing rice fields in Cameroon since December 2011, investing some two-point-three trillion won in the project.

Thanks to the efforts, a 20 hectare mechanized farming complex is being created in Cameroon's province of Centre. A single hectare is expected to yield six tons of rice plants since the local climate allows for double cropping.
