The South Korean Defense Ministry says it will faithfully implement inter-Korean military agreements and pursue inter-Korean military talks on a regular basis.

Defense Minister Suh Wook on Thursday briefed President Moon Jae-in at the presidential office on seven major policies of the ministry this year.

Suh said the September 19, 2018 agreements will be faithfully implemented on the South’ part, expecting it will contribute to mutual trust building and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

If North Korea makes corresponding moves, the minister said, the South will seek to institutionalize inter-Korean military talks and realize stalled joint projects such as the excavation of the Korean War remains along the Demilitarized Zone.

Free movement of both sides within the Joint Security Area will also be realized, he said.

The ministry’s plans for inter-Korean cooperation were announced after President Moon said in his New Year press conference on Monday that Seoul is willing to discuss with Pyongyang joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises and other issues through a joint military committee.

Regarding the ongoing transfer of the wartime operational control from Washington, the ministry said it will try to accelerate the transfer by creating a conducive environment through talks with the Joe Biden administration.
