Ahn Cheol-soo, the minor opposition People's Party candidate for the April 7 Seoul mayoral race, said he will seek to merge with the main opposition People Power Party(PPP) after the election.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the leader of the minor party said he will seek the merger regardless of whether he defeats PPP candidate Oh Se-hoon in a primary aimed at fielding a unified opposition candidate.

The merger, Ahn said, would be the only way to stop the Moon Jae-in administration's "incompetency and tyranny."

Ahn put forth a three-step plan, in which he would form a joint election committee with the PPP as the unified candidate, then push to merge with the PPP with support from his party after becoming Seoul mayor. The final step would involve pan-opposition unity.

Ahn hoped his plan would help ease concerns that he would abandon the PPP after becoming the unified candidate and launch a third party with former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl, who is currently the leading potential 2022 presidential candidate.
