Language thinking can be weird

2022-09-08

I got so used to reading subtitles that something kind of funny happened with my brain. I really liked watching band members show their personalities on shows and interviews. But after a month or so of binging videos of Korean with subtitles, I got so comfortable reading and matching it with individuals faces it all got pretty seamless in my head. Then I tried out a live stream one night. Guess what? No subtitles. But... for more seconds then I'd like to admit, my subconscious mind couldn't figure out why I couldn't understand these people all of a sudden after "listening" to them for so long by reading their words. I had to logically remind myself they are speaking another language and remember I was completely dependent on the translation.

However I was listening to How You Like That for the hundredth time and my ears legitimately picked out Jisoo's hana dul set and I knew what that meant from hearing it counted off on shows. I know it's only a minimal feat, but I got a little excited. Maybe because I struggled with Spanish in high school so learning any words by exposure alone is new. Also my wires keep getting crossed and making me think I hear Spanish words in KPop songs occasionally.
