'No Command Oversight Change in USFK'
The United States Forces Korea has denied a recent Japanese media report that said commanders in the United States Forces Japan will be given command oversight for contingencies on the Korean peninsula.
The USFK said that there are currently no plans to relinquish such command to the USFJ, characterizing as inaccurate the report published by the Nihon Keizai daily.
The Japanese article had implied that the ongoing relocation of USFJ headquarters to Camp Zama in Kanagawa, Japan also entailed its assuming of operational command for emergencies on the Korean peninsula.
The USFK criticized the report's speculation as sowing confusion and undermining the South Korea-U.S. alliance, which it said enjoys a spirit of utmost cooperation.
It also stressed that any change to command structures that affect the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command or USFK would be coordinated directly with the Korean government.
