Court to Speed up Trials for Election Law Violators
The Supreme Court has decided to speed up trial proceedings for election law violators.
Under a plan announced by the Court, the trial process, including appeals proceedings, will be completed within six months, with each stage of the three-trial system taking no less than two months.
The plan was adopted at a Monday meeting of nationwide election-related trial justices.
Currently, the trial of election law violators often last two-to-three years, allowing them to stay in office for a long time or even serve out their terms before their election is nullified.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Lee Yong-hun earlier called for speedy proceedings and stricter sentences for election law violators.
The new measure will be applied beginning with the May 30th local elections.
