Parties Feud Over Constitutional Court Head

Ruling and opposition parties are feuding over the failure to confirm Jeon Hyo-sook as the new Constitutional Court head.

Ruling Uri Party floor leader Kim Han-gill urged the main opposition Grand National Party to accept its proposal for a TV debate if the GNP can dispel public suspicion about the failure to confirm a new Constitutional Court chief.

Questioning the GNP's legitimacy as the nation’s largest opposition party, Uri Party chairman Kim Geun-tae vowed to confirm Jeon at the plenary parliament session on September 14.

Meanwhile, the GNP repeated that nominee Jeon should withdraw, saying she is unqualified and called her nomination process problematic.

GNP chairman Kang Jae-seop, saying that the nomination process should be what he termed "legal," demanded that President Roh withdraw his nomination or that nominee Jeon decline the offer.
