Roh: Progressives Must Change

News2007-02-17

President Roh Moo-hyun has urged the progressives to seriously ponder the country's future.

In a contribution to a presidential office briefing Saturday, titled "The Progressives Must Change," Roh urged flexibility in embracing opinions to realize progressive values.

He questioned the intentions of some members of the progressives who are opposing the new U.S. base site in Pyeongtaek, when the U.S. army base relocaton out of Seoul has been the progressives' long time goal.

He said Korea is not a country just for progressives, urging them to acknowledge the troop dispatch to Iraq and the proposed free trade agreement with the U.S.

Roh advised them to no longer hinder himself and his administration, calling himelf a flexible progressive and neither a leftist nor a neo-liberalist.

His criticism is seen as his intent to carry out projects throughout his remaining term in office.
